Pakistani Mujra Dance Videos – Meaning, Dancers & Lollywood Songs
Mujra is a dance with roots in the courts and salons of Mughal-era South Asia, and in Pakistan today it lives on in stage shows and Lollywood film songs. Netflix’s Heeramandi (2024) brought the tradition to viewers worldwide, and many people now search for Pakistani mujra from the UK, the US, Canada and the Gulf. This guide explains the meaning, the two main styles and the dancers to know, with a sample clip. 18+ only.
What does mujra mean?
Mujra was originally performed by tawaifs, trained courtesan performers, in Lucknow, Delhi and Lahore. It mixes Kathak-style footwork and gestures with ghazal and thumri singing. In Lahore the tradition was centred on the old Heera Mandi quarter. Today the word mostly means a glamorous solo dance number set to a film song or a live stage track.
Stage mujra vs filmi mujra
Stage mujra is the dance number inside Punjabi stage dramas, filmed live in theatres and shared online. Filmi mujra is a song sequence in a Lollywood (Pakistani) film. Our staged vs filmi guide explains how the clips on this site are sorted.
