Lollywood Songs – Classic Pakistani Punjabi Film Songs, Explained in English

Lollywood is the Pakistani film industry, historically based in Lahore. Its Punjabi-language films of the 1990s to 2010s are remembered above all for their song-and-dance numbers, and people now look them up from the UK, the US, Canada and the Gulf. This guide explains what Lollywood songs are, why the Punjabi film era is so searched today, and plays three classic song clips from the archive. 18+ only.

What is Lollywood?

The name joins Lahore and Hollywood, in the same way as Bollywood (Bombay) and Tollywood. Lahore studios produced films in Urdu and Punjabi, and from the 1990s the Punjabi action-musical became the industry’s mainstay: big family feuds, heroes with Gujjar or Rajpoot surnames in the title, and several song numbers per film.

Why classic Lollywood songs are still searched

Many of these films never had a proper DVD or streaming release, so the songs survive as TV rips and uploads. Overseas Punjabi and Pakistani audiences search for them by song line (“Balde Pinde Utte Mahiya”), by film (Madam X, Hasina 20 20) or by dancer. Several of the same performers also worked in Lahore stage shows, which is where the filmi mujra style comes from.

Lollywood vs Bollywood songs

Bollywood songs are Hindi, made in Mumbai and usually far bigger in budget. Lollywood Punjabi songs are louder and more folk-based, with dhol rhythms and Punjabi lyrics, and they are often filmed on a single set.
